“Hey,” Hayden Parker said as John walked into his temporary studio an hour later. John had met the freelance IT guy a couple of times at the publishing house when he’d helped with various technical snafus in the studio, and Hayden seemed nice and competent, if a bit eccentric. His style of dress was somewhere between 80s Prince and a John Deere tractor driver if John was forced to categorize it. “They sent me up here to collect this equipment you ordered yesterday, if you’re done with it.”

“All finished,” John said, walking past the desk where Gideon had sat the day before to set his bag on his chair. “Thanks for getting my friend set up on such short notice. I’m sure you guys are still crazy busy after the explosion.”

“No problem. And yes, we are. Mainly it the servers we’re dealing with. Trying to get them all running properly and back up to speed,” Hayden said, focusing on gathering all the cables together. “Kind of glad they called me in, actually, since my side hustle is slow right now.”

“What side hustle is that?” John asked.

“Oh, I do web design. Data retrieval, stuff like that.”

“Huh.” John took of his jacket and hung it over the back of his chair. “Is that lucrative?”

“Can be, with the right clients.”

John walked over to inspect the backdrop he and Gideon had moved down the other day. It was the same green screen he’d used for Gideon’s shoot. Today, instead of a historical novel set in Scotland, he’d be shooting a cover for a sci-fi romance. The models were getting ready at a salon next door, due to Lila still being off, then they’d report to John in their costumes and full alien make up. As he set up his equipment, he couldn’t help imaging Gideon dressed as a sexy space adventurer, tight leather pants, and nothing else. Tanned skin and rippling muscle showing. The man was quickly becoming a distraction John couldn’t afford. He frowned down at the camera he was attaching to a tripod. “Sorry? I didn’t hear you.”

Hayden shook his head. “No worries. I just asked if you ever get bored, shooting all those book covers.”

“Oh, uh…no.” John finished secured his camera then adjusted the lights too keep busy. “Not really. Every day is different, which I like. Do you get bored designing other people’s websites?”

“God yes!” Hayden said with enough feeling that John laughed.
